Dear King George III

By Lucas Gregory Liwosz

“This is a letter from Lucas G. Liwosz to King George III after the new United States Of America publicly declare independence from Britain. It was written as a middle school assignment. We are proud.”

As I am sure you’re aware, some changes have been made between us. I believe I speak for all of your subjects across the sea when I say that these recent alterations to our relationship have not been for the better. In the past, us colonies have been allowed certain freedoms that I feel have recently been taken away. In the past, I could do what I wanted as long as I stayed loyal to you. Now, this dynamic between us has become much more controlling. The time to acknowledge the inevitable truth draws nearer as the once strong bond between motherland and colony begins to decay.

In the past, I was allowed to trade goods with whoever I wanted. Now it’s you or no one. Now, I am paying for overpriced goods and can’t compete with the rest of the world economically. Also, remember that little war we had with France recently? Us colonists left our families and lives behind to go off to the horrors of war, all while staying unyieldingly at your side. Want to know what you gave us in return for staining the battlefield with our blood, sweat, and tears? Nothing. While you were sitting in your lavish palace doing whatever your soul desired, we were fighting for land you wouldn’t even let us use. Instead you decided to blame us for the debt created by the war and make the ludicrous decision to place a tax on practically everything. What’s this? You’re mad we wasted your tea? Well maybe you should have thought about that before making it so expensive. The worst part, these decisions are being made by you and your aristocratic accomplices. You’re changing the way I live my life and I’m not getting any say in it. The list of grievances goes on further than you wish to believe, but I think you get the point.

Us colonists felt that the time to take action had arrived. So, we extended you an olive branch that you might as well have put a chainsaw to. Here I was thinking changes could be made diplomatically but no, instead, you have pushed your colonists past the breaking point. Your once faithful colonists now stand united against your tyranny as the flame of independence begins to burn within our souls. You have left us with no choice but to declare an end to our relationship and break free from the shackles of your evil.

With disgust, the brand new United States of America.
